Netrunning 2D'd for 2077?
So when I played the RPG in the old days, the netrunner character was my jam. You jack into the net, fly down onto Night City from above, zoom down on to the city and hack into a building's system and Doom into it with your avatar and face off with ICE and data walls with your cyberdeck full of programs looking for nodes to control and data to download while other PCs do stuff in real time.
It looks like in 2077 netrunning is going to be done in a contextual menu with no VR interface. Is that how it is?
I could see why devs might do that to keep the scale of the game manageable, but if so, might there be a netrunning DLC?

Netrunning has changed a bit in Cyberpunk Red. Since I caught the hypebug for this game, I've been diving into so much of the franchise. I watched a video with this group of Tabletop youtubers called Dicebreakers play the Jumpstart kit of Red with Cody Pondsmith (Mike's son). Apparently, while netrunning now, you don't go into a comatose state, but rather it's akin to using VR, so you're semi-aware of what's happening in meat space instead of being totally defenseless. And during the campaign, the netrunner character encountered a security software called "Hellhound" which takes the form of an actual giant hellhound to guard the net level of what you're hacking. So I do hope we see something like that in 2077.

I'm excited for Red as well. I have 3 or 4 characters planned for 2077 that I'd also like to realize in Red. I'm also just interested in seeing more about the world, weapons, cyberware, and gangs from the rulebook.

Hey just a word of caution, never mess with a guy who calls himself a Nutrunner! If he's got 10 points in Interface (Nuts) you're in big trouble!
But seriously Clambchowder I always like the netrunner class because going into the net was it's whole awesome thing. You can jack into the net (the Matrix was Shadowrun) and do stuff like open up doors and take over security systems while your team infiltrates a building, or maybe just hack in on your own and get data for a future run.
If you ever William Gibson's book Neuromancer (a lot of people would say it's the seminal cyberpunk novel) the main character is a Matrix jockey and that gives you the whole experience of being a netrunner in story form. Totally go read that and then you'll have all the tools you need to choose your cyberpunk character.
Last time I played Cyberpunk 2020 I played a media. I was out there trying to crack open the system writing an underground Screamsheet trying to get a big story and running with a solo and a rocker. It was awesome! My advice is read neuromancer and then play Cyberpunk 2020! Hey in face, who wants to get on roll 20 and play some Cyberpunk!????

I'm really hoping Night City Wire shows us what it's all about. So far it doesn't seem like it's too much more than hacking abilities in a Deus Ex game. Not trying to crap on it-- it looks cool, but it doesn't look like 3d navigating the net or anything like that.
My game reference for my hopes is the 2020 tabletop RPG obviously, and then the Shadowrun Genesis game. IN that game you would jack into the Matrix and your digital persona would fly over the digital netspace to a node and you'd use programs to hack it, then navigate the nodes and confront hostile programs and barriers and try to steal data and do stuff. It was legit and that was in like '92 or something.
I hope they can make something like that happen for this game. Even if it's a DLC which would be totally understandable considering the scope of the game at launch.

I'm looking forward to playing Cyberpunk Red, but I'm going to wait until the full version comes out.
I'm pretty sure Hellhound was one of the ICE programs in 2020 too but I don't have my book handy. I do know that the net was awesome. Can't wait to get into the RPG again, as well as the PC game.
